Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, 21-year-old MC Grynch first discovered Hip-Hop in elementary school when a classmate let him borrow a tape of Dr. Dre’s classic, The Chronic. From that point on, it was a wrap as he became completely immersed in Hip-Hop music and culture, listening to and studying everything from Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Doggystyle to Mobb Deep’s The Infamous. It wouldn’t be long before Grynch would try his hand at writing rhymes himself at the age of 10.

He spent the next few years learning his craft and released his first project, an EP titled The 7 Deadly Sins, during his senior year of high school in 2004. The project’s release was limited but it generated a buzz big enough for more than a few people to take notice of Grynch’s potential as an artist. He released his debut LP, This Is What I Do, in 2005. The album was received well within the Northwest Hip-Hop scene, with its lead single “So Free” receiving spins on both KUBE 93.3 FM and X104.5 FM.

As a follow-up to This Is What I Do, Grynch released a mixtape with DJ Stylz in 2006 titled How The Grynch Stole Hip-Hop Vol. 1. He released yet another mixtape in 2007 with DJ Nphared titled Heat. His sophomore LP, My Second Wind, is scheduled for an early 2008 release.

Grynch has shared stages with a variety of national artists including Little Brother, Joe Budden, C-Rayz Walz, Mac Mall & Blue Scholars. He has also collaborated with a number of notable artists including Dogg Pound affiliate Bad Azz, Geologic of Blue Scholars, Macklemore, D.Black, Neema of Unexpected Arrival, Fatal Lucciauno & Ricky Pharoe. In addition, Grynch has been featured on numerous projects and compilations including Reigncraft Vol. 6: Gotta Do It! on which he has the opening track, “That’s Hip-Hop.” The song received spins on both KUBE 93.3 FM and KEXP 90.3 FM as well as Shade 45 on Sirius Satellite Radio.

Javier Colon has a lot of heart.
In fact, that heart is precisely why he captivated America as winner of the inaugural season of NBC’s hit television show, The Voice. It’s why he never gave up on his dream of a career in music even in the face of numerous setbacks and what seemed like endless adversity. It’s why every time he writes a song, it strikes a chord.
Colon is no stranger to the music business. After touring with The Derek Trucks Band for two years, he released two major label albums via Capital Records—Javier in 2003 and Left of Center in 2006. Both releases illustrated a daring creativity that expanded beyond the confines of pop music, while still retaining an undeniable sense of melody. He already began to stand out as he carved the foundation for his self-dubbed, “acoustic soul” style.
Colon eventually split with Capitol and released The Truth – Acoustic EP on his own label, Javier Colon Music, in 2010. After a decade, he’d already experienced the road, dealt with the struggles of trying to excel on a competitive and crowded major label roster, and faced the challenges of promoting his music independently. In a sense, he’d seen it all and could’ve thrown in the towel. He wasn’t going to stop though.
Notified of the chance to audition for The Voice in early 2011, Colon took the opportunity. He’d been fighting for another record deal for five years to no avail and wasn’t sure about what the next step would be. Almost canceling the audition due to other show commitments, he decided to go anyway.
“I’m glad I went because The Voice was the best thing that’s happened up to this point in my career,” smiles Colon. “I really try to put everything I am into my songs and performances. I never expect anything, and winning was a shock. I was one-hundred percent happy that I’d simply gotten to the final four contestants. When Carson Daly announced I was the winner, I was elated and I couldn’t believe it. I’m very thankful.”
Colon’s humility is just as spellbinding as his voice is. Both of those elements charmed America and consequentially led to his victory on the show including a recording contract with Universal Republic Records. Whether he was performing “Landslide” with Stevie Nicks, or his fan favorite acoustic rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” the performer captured the hearts of millions.
Original song and debut single “Stitch By Stitch” not only clenched the top prize on The Voice for Colon, but it also became something of a phenomenon. During the first week of its digital release, the song exceeded sales of 145,000 and peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Colon even performed “Stitch By Stitch” on the Tonight Show With Jay Leno. With its lilting acoustic guitar and Colon’s palpable, powerful delivery, it’s an honest and heartfelt ballad.
The song holds serious significance for the singer for myriad reasons. “It represents a broken man trying to put his life or career back together,” reveals Colon. “It’s about having someone there to support you when things aren’t at their best, help you when you’ve fallen, and give you the strength to fight on and succeed. In my case, that person is my wife.”
“Stitch By Stitch” is only one thread of Colon’s debut. He began writing songs for the record in July 2011, and he dove deep inside himself. The next single drops in November 2011 and it promises that same honesty.
He goes on, “I feel like this is my formal debut. Lyrically, the album is going to cover all of the ups and downs that my family and I have been through. My experiences make their way into my music, and they help me stay focused. I want to tell my tale. If do this wonderful thing that I love, there’s going to be a ton of work, but I’m up for it.”
Colon’s been up for it since he first discovered music as a kid growing up in Connecticut. His father was a DJ at a local radio station, so there was always music playing at home. “From an early age, I’d start mimicking the singers I’d hear on the radio,” he recalls. “With encouragement from my mom and a few teachers, I started performing at school. After that, I wanted to be all over anything that had to do with music.”
In addition, Colon writes his own songs, constantly keeping himself open to inspiration. A family man, he keeps his wife and daughters close to his heart at all times often writing about them. He continues, “I connect emotionally to the songs I write, especially if they have anything to do with my wife or my little girls. As a result, music can happen at any time. I’ve had instances where I’ll wake up in the middle of the night with two full verses of lyrics that I hardly even have to think about. I hope people connect to that.”
When they get a chance to hear the full album, they’ll undoubtedly connect. Colon isn’t simply following anyone else’s path either; he’s making his own way. “My influences range from James Taylor to James Brown,” Colon adds. “I approach pop from a singer-songwriter’s perspective, and I try to infuse soul into that style.”
With a fresh take on pop, soul, and acoustic music, Javier’s journey starts with the release of this record. He concludes, “I hope the album takes people on my journey through all of the trials and tribulations we’ve made it through together. It’s definitely important that the songs move people.”
His new album, Come Through For You, features guest appearances from Natasha Bedingfield and Adam Levine.

“Who I am and what I do seems to vary by mod, mood, and mode of expression. I write. I act. I perform. Most of the labels that are projected onto me are seldom how I would choose to refer to myself. Yet, regardless of how much I might dodge classification, the one label that I tote freely is that of being an artist. And it is the art of self expression that has heightened my experience on this planet and fueled my understanding of love, compassion, and humanity.

Poet.

I write poetry because it is the clearest and most direct expression of how I think. I take pride in being called a poet mostly because it feels like an ordination. I did not grow up thinking of myself as a poet, so it is an honor to be considered one. So far, I’ve wriiten four books that fall under the category of poetry. For me, they chronicle my growth as an artist, friend, lover, father, son, and individual. My goal has never truly been to become an amazing poet, rather I have worked at becoming more expressive, thoughtful, and harmoniously balanced, and courageous enough to live my life as a poem. My writings simply chronicle my journey and vision. They are the residue of the work that I’m doing on myself.

Music.

I write music because I have found that I cannot relie on other artists, or the music industry to provide the release that I need from a days work, a night out, to inspire a mood, a movement, or simply explore the unsaid in ways that are important to me. I’ve sought to become self sufficient. In music I think of myself as an explorer participating in the construction of the soundscape of the new world that is being hatched out of our dreams, hope and visions of peace and harmony… that don’t necesarily mean my shit is soft though…

Performance.

Acting, my first love as an artist, has allowed me insight into the nature of humanity. The many roles I have played, especially in theatre, exposed me to aspects of my own character before I even lived through enough experience to discover traits within myself. Through acting, I found an excuse to study everything from my own breathing habits, to the beats within a passage or poem, to the unexplored regions of my imagination. “

Award-winning Nigerian musician Seun Kuti is the youngest son of beloved Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, who was revered for his radical politics as much as his music. Seun is very much his father’s son: he has that deep singing voice and plays alto saxophone with a pungent, muscular, sexy blend of funk and jazz infused with traditional African elements. Not only that, he is co-leader of Fela’s old band, the deservedly legendary Egypt 80. An 18-piece powerhouse of explosive dance grooves, heavy-hitting basslines, vibrant spectacle and lots of politicized energy, Egypt 80 generates a sophisticated blend of beats and rhythms. Seun is in his early 20s and grew up with the band, most of whom are incredible musical veterans in their 50s and 60s. Shortly after Mark befriended Derrick Carter in 1988 at a record store in Chicago, his passion for House music, and sharing it with the world, exploded.

Mark experimented with a deeper style, dropping De La Soul, disco classics and other stuff that wasn’t being played in the main rooms of nightclubs. While exploring his love for the purist forms of House Music, Mark developed his trademark style: Mushroom Jazz; acid jazz infused with the West Coast’s jazzy, organic productions combined with urban beats.

Fans embraced Mark’s downtempo style so much that he started a weekly Mushroom Jazz club night in San Francisco with Patty Ryan. In 3 short years, the club established a fanatical, cult-like following for Farina and the Mushroom Jazz sound. When the doors closed, Farina continued the tradition by releasing a series of Cds on OM Records: simply titled, “Mushroom Jazz”.

Since then, Mark has been traveling the globe performing 100s of shows, to over one million club goers, every year. His House sets take fans on journeys to the jazzy side of Chicago House mixed San Fran style. Some of these sets have been known to last up to 8 hours. And sometimes you’ll find Mark playing in two different rooms at the same party, showcasing his range of big room sound to the uber-chill.

When Mark’s not touring, you can likely find him in his studio, working on his next release for his imprint, Great Lakes Audio, or on another signature mix for Mushroom Jazz.

Mark’s chunky-funky underground house style continually turns the heads of tastemakers worldwide, drawing him not only new fans, but landing him on the Top DJs in the World lists by URB, MUZIK and BPM Magazines.
