BOLT THROWER // boltthrower.com

Bolt Thrower were formed in 1986 by Barry Thomson (guitar) and Gavin Ward (bass). They were soon joined by Alan West (vocals), and completed the line-up with the addition of Andy Whale (drums). Inspired at that time by bands such as Sacrilege, Discharge, Slayer and Candlemass, the four-piece went on to record two demos, ‘In Battle…’ and ‘Concession of Pain’. The latter was sent to the late, great John Peel, which resulted in the band being offered a session. At this time Gavin Ward decided to switch to guitar and then recruited Jo Bench on bass to complete the five-piece line-up. At the start of 1988, BOLT THROWER recorded their first Peel Session, and after the transmission was aired Vinyl Solution contacted the band and a deal was agreed. Unfortunately, Alan West decided that he no longer wanted to carry on with the band and was replaced by Karl Willetts. With this line-up they went on to record the album ‘In Battle There Is No Law’ recorded at Loco Studios in Wales and released in the summer of 1988.

DON CARLOS // doncarlosreggae.com

Don Carlos (born Euvin Spencer) Legendary Reggae Artist – Born and raised in one of the most deprived regions of Western Kingston, Jamaica, in a district notoriously known as Waterhouse, which incidentally is also a musical spawning ground for many of Reggae’s greatest ever talents, such as King Tubby, The Jays, Junior Reid and King Jammy to name but a few, Don Carlos started his singing career back in 1973, as one of the original members of the aforementioned roots vocal group Black Uhuru. Alongside other founding members, Garth Dennis who later went on to joining the Wailing Souls and Derrick Ducky Simpson Uhuru’s central figure, as part of the trio, Don played a prominent role in the recordings of the highly acclaimed Love Crisis album, for producer Prince Jammy in 1977. The said album was later re-released and re-titled as Black Sounds of Freedom. A year after the trio’s ground breaking debut, Don Carlos surprisingly decided to part company in pursuit of a solo career. Having needed at least three years to get the grips of being a soloist, plus developing a knack for song writing and grooming that distinctive, vocal styling it wasn’t until May 1981 that Carlos really took the fraternity by storm, courtesy of a heavy, roots and culture flavored show case album titled Suffering for Negus Roots.

BRENT AMAKER AND THE RODEO // brentamaker.com

From desolate deserts to snow washed mountains Brent Amaker and The Rodeo have been searching for the Truth. This pursuit has produced numerous albums and taken them to venues across the world, in spotless matching threads, to perform their songs for a dedicated cult following. Their sound, which could aptly be described as a Morricone soundtrack written by Kraftwerk with dead serious classic country vocals, has garnered them placement in television shows such as “Weeds” and “Califonication”. In 2013 Brent Amaker and The Rodeo will release their new full length Year Of The Dragon. The album’s 13 all new tracks take square aim at Truth – to spill a weathered wisdom across the current musical landscape.

ROB GARZA // robgarza.com

As one half of electronic music pioneers/producers Thievery Corporation, he has been at the forefront of music for over a decade and a half traveling the globe performing, remixing, djing, recording and composing. Since Garza’s recent relocation to San Francisco, he has begun a re- exploration of his love for electronic music and beats focusing on Nu-Disco, Cosmic Boogie, and Deep House while keeping very groove oriented and outer-national based rhythms. He says: “My foundation is electronic music and I’m more excited now then ever what is happening in that universe. I feel like there is a flowering of ideas, styles and sub genres.” And when asked how San Francisco has influenced this new direction: “there’s so much going on right now in the Bay area, it’s hard to not feel a re- inspiration when it comes to art and creativity. Recently he has been djing and remixing, taking things to an even more spaced out and trippy level.

LUCIANO // lucianoreggae.com

The Messenger has since ascended to even greater musical heights with “A New Day” (2001) “Serve Jah” (2003), “Serious Times” (2004), all for VP Records, and his latest effort, Child of A King”, the crowning glory of his exalted career thus far. The set opens with the acoustic “Remember When” as Luciano reflects on ancient kingdoms of Africa and the inherited regal identity that is present in all of us. Heads of government are chided for their war mongering on “Watch What You’re Doing” and “This One’s For The Leaders” recorded on Don Corleone’s massive Drop Leaf riddim. He confronts a deceiving lover on “Can’t Take No More”, cautions against the fleeting gratification of materialism on “Silver and Gold” (voiced on Steven “Gibbo” Gibbs’ Hard Times riddim) and sternly warns gun men to turn their lives around on “Brother Man”:”Mr. man rinsing your steel, taking another life how do you feel?/One day I know your time will come, better take this word of advice and put down your gun.”

“Child of a King” also offers an eclectic range of cover versions from Nina Simone’s empowering anthem of African identity “Young Gifted and Black” to Cat Stevens’ mid 1970s unity plea “Peace Train” and UK easy-listening superstar Roger Whitaker’s desire for a better planet on “New World in the Morning”. Luciano’s stunning, heartfelt interpretation of these disparate tunes offers an incomparable presentation of the roots rock icon’s diversified skills. “I came out of roots and culture as a reggae singer and have proven to people that I can fit into any genre of music,” he proclaims. “I sing reggae, gospel, roots, I will sing rock too but always keeping my message clean, spiritual and cultural. Over the years I have listened to international artists like Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, (CandW legend) Jim Reeves, all these great brothers so I have learned to appreci-love other works. There are no barriers in music, although I am well known as a reggae culture singer, I have an international message so I cannot leave it just to reggae people. I have to extend it to people of all walks of life.” Spoken like a truly benevolent messenger and the globally minded child of a king.

Wednesday June 26, 2013
$15 ADV // 8PM // 21+

SEAN NELSON // facebook.com/SeanNelsonMusicPage

Sean Nelson is best known as the former lead singer of Seattle’s Harvey Danger, a Seattle indie pop band whose curious fortune it was to have a song from their debut album turn into a radio and MTV hit during the sharp intake of breath that separated the twilight of the dubious “alternative” era and the period when the internet arose from the ashes of the rock and roll Rome that burned down while Limp Bizkit fiddled. Harvey Danger’s song, “Flagpole Sitta,” was an out- of-nowhere anthem that can still be heard at karaoke bars, sports arenas, and one excellent British sitcom (to say nothing of non-ironic-seeming recent covers by Deer Tick and Beast Make Bomb and a landmark lip dub video that probably has more hits than the original) every day of the week, every week of the year, every year since 1998. Though the song’s success cast a long shadow over the rest of the band’s efforts, they did in the end find a loving and appreciative audience and a scale they could enjoy. Their four LPs were ambitious, influential, and deeply loved by a cult of devotees that continues to spread the word.

ROGUE WAVE // roguewavemusic.com

Now we’re born again,” sings Zach Rogue on the closing track of Rogue Wave’s fourth studio album, Permalight. The dreamy acoustic lament lasts just over a minute but in sound and spirit it neatly sums up everything that comes before it. A punchy, deceptively effervescent set of multi-instrumental pop tunes, the Northern California band’s latest set represents a giant breakthrough for Rogue and his longtime musical partner, drummer-keyboardist-vocalist Pat Spurgeon. “The record sounds, for lack of a better word, fun,” the frontman says. It’s an astonishing change of direction, to say the least. Formed by Rogue in 2002 after he lost his tech job and parted ways with the Oakland rock group Desoto Reds, Rogue Wave has a reputation for crafting classic, inward-looking pop songs highlighted with psychedelic guitars, pastoral sound effects and intricate rhythms.

THE UNCLUDED // facebook.com/theuncluded

In 2007, while on tour supporting his album None Shall Pass, indie rapper/producer Aesop Rock wrote a fan email to folk singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson. A few years later they reconnected during the creation of arts-and-oddities blog 900Bats, which in turn sparked the pair’s collaborative musical efforts. After appearing on each other’s respective recent solo records, Aesop RockSkelethon (Rhymesayers) and Kimya Dawson- Thunder Thighs (Great Crap Factory), both found more worth pursuing within the group dynamic, and The Uncluded were hatched. “Unclude – verb- Keeping things you don’t appreciate out of your life.” – Michael Bernard Loggins. The group name The Uncluded was chosen based on an excerpt from the book Imaginationally by artist/writer Michael Bernard Loggins. Imaginationally is an illustrated dictionary of words Loggins created to describe his daily experiences and thoughts. The Uncluded’s debut album Hokey Fright was recorded over the course of a year using a variety of locations and devices, from voice memo recorders to fleshed out studios. Aesop and Kimya wrote, performed, and recorded the whole album, with the exception of the drums on “Delicate Cycle”, which were played by James McNew of Yo La Tengo. Having both experienced some loss in recent years, conversations about mortality served as a starting point for what would eventually become an album as much about finding therapy through writing/sharing as it is about being ok with admitting fear in the face of adversity. There is a sense of self-exploration and discovery that happens during the songs, as if the two are doing the problem-solving in front of you. While much of the album maintains a serious tone, Dawson and Rock’s oddball humor plays an integral part in humanizing the obstacles that can initially seem too massive to process.

FOXYGEN // foxygen.bandcamp.com

Foxygen is the bi-coastal songwriting duo of Sam France (vocals, Olympia, Wash., 22 years old) and Jonathan Rado (guitar/keyboards, NYC, 22). They are the raw, de-Wes Andersonization of The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Velvets, Bowie, etc. that a whole mess of young people desperately need. They create a sometimes-impressionistic, sometimes-hyper-real portrait of sounds from specific places and times. Yet, it never comes across as anything but absolutely modern music. They bring the manic, freewheeling qualities of an artist like Ariel Pink to those aforementioned influences to make for one of the most refreshing listens of the year. They are the real deal and total savants. Their albums are love letters to vinyl collections.

WHITE FENCE // whitefenceartcollective.blogspot.com

Tim Presley is a member of the bands Darker My Love and the Strange Boys, which do variations of dirtied-up psychedelic pop. White Fence is his third band and much more idiosyncratic. It’s just Mr. Presley making songs as complicated as he wants, with his multitracked asthmatic voice and his gift for weird, wayward song hooks. On White Fence, just released on CD by Woodsist, drum rhythms stumble and recohere; chord changes are half-forgotten or blown altogether. Audio quality changes from track to track or even in the middle of a song, and so does the music’s speed. The album sounds as if it were mastered on a cassette machine with failing batteries. This whole enterprise is way, way moth eaten: the Syd Barrett/1960s Los Angeles garage-punk influences, the dirty-on-purpose sound quality, the overmodulated guitar leads. By a certain logic it should be a stone loser. But so much in music comes down to conviction. There’s something ritual about these songs, as if Mr. Presley had been carrying them in his head, with all their details, for a long time. Listen even once, and they’re hard to shake. All of Mr. Presley’s strange touches start to seem significant and obsessively desired: a short background sigh, a few seconds of harmonica or xylophone, a new strain plopped into the middle of a song that leads nowhere, a guitar solo that’s longer than it needs to be. It’s mannered and indirect music, but he’s a poet of that.

THE MELVINS // themelvins.net

It hasn’t been a year since the last bona fide Melvins album but nonetheless, slated for release is yet another album… However, this here new one is actually a RE-release of the classic Melvins record “10 songs”. Of course the NEW one has a NEW super deluxe cover and has been expanded to 26 songs. That’s 16 more than the original! The record even includes a secret recording of one of their hometown buddies out of his mind on Angel Dust. This added historical window should fully explain their origin and current message in a way never before captured on record. Even if this reissue is 16 years old you can rest assured this record is up to date! If you get this record you can know there is nothin’ or nobody ahead of you. Nobody knows nothin’ that you don’t know. All the cards are on the table friends and that’s a fact! Dang! It’s been damn near 20 years since these Melvins started and they still have yet to find the common decency to die or break up. The core-band of King Buzzo and Dale remains intact and they’ve had the same bass player since 1998! Hailing from the Minneapolis Cows is pioneering slide bass pervert Kevin “Rutmanis”. The Melvins proclaim this lineup the definitive whatever you want to call it of whatever it is they think they do. Nothing should be denied them forever more.

AUSTRA // austramusic.com

After three years of non-stop international touring with the likes of the XX, Grimes and the Gossip, when it came time to record Olympia, Austra had evolved into a complex collaborative effort between its six members. “Previously, I would flesh out songs before I brought them to the band, but this time I left them bare and let the others fill them in” explains Katie Stelmanis, the principal songwriter/vocalist. Olympia is also the first confessional record for Stelmanis as evidenced by the heartfelt lyrics of piano driven lead single “Home” (stream now). “Home” expresses the anxieties of waiting up all night for a lover to return. “I was mad and upset and the song just wrote itself,” says the singer. The album touches on a range of sentiments that stem from a relationship ending, a relationship beginning, and friends’ struggles with addiction and motivation. Despite the sometimes dark lyrics written in collaboration with band member Sari Lightman, Olympia is bubbly and buoyant— fundamentally a dance record, which Stelmanis says was the band’s aim all along. “We are really into dense harmonies and big beautiful melodies, but I also love techno and dance music. I wanted to bring those elements together.” Though Olympia is filled with electronic and synthetic sounds that reference everything from Trax Record classic cuts to Yazoo’s Upstairs At Eric’s, it’s free of programming and loops. Everything was played live by the band in the studio and all of the percussion including a wild set up of marimbas and congas is drummer Maya Postepski. “Maya played a huge role in the production of the album,” says Stelmanis, who has been playing with the drummer for eight years since their previous band, Galaxy. “There is a major percussive element running through every song,” Stelmanis laughs, “this is the album where we discovered rhythm.”

HANSON // hanson.net

Native sons of Tulsa, Oklahoma, HANSON has been making music together for nearly two decades. Thirteen years ago, their out-of-the-blue, soul-inspired brand of American pop-rock‘n’roll was introduced to the world. Unaffected by charts or fads, they’ve spent more than a decade building a community of fans connected to one another and fueled by the energy and craftsmanship of three brothers and their music. Their fifth studio album, Shout It Out, is set to be released on June 8th 2010 on their label 3CG Records. They deliver a powerful group of soulful, melodic tunes that will leave you with a contagious sense of optimism for the future and welcomed reminiscence for American rock ‘n’ roll.

MARKY RAMONE // markyramone.com

ANDREW W.K. // andrewwk.com

Andrew W.K. will be joining Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg as the lead singer for their 2013 world tour.  The punk drumming icon and his band will be fronted by the king of partying for a high-octane performance of more than THIRTY of Marky’s classic fan-favorite songs!  These will include songs that took him from the halcyon stage of CBGB’s to touring around the world.  From the celluloid halls of Rock ‘n Roll High School to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Ramone’s career has taken him far and wide, earning him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award, and immortalizing his handprints on the Hollywood Rock Walk. Speaking on how he chose Andrew W.K. as his singer, Ramone said, “I first met Andrew through a mutual friend and he told me about his party philosophy, which has also always been my exact take on life.  We went into the rehearsal studio and it just clicked.  We had so much fun that we wanted to invite everyone to the party.  I’ve said before and I will say it again, these songs are too good not to be played live!!!”

W.K. echoed Ramone’s sentiment, saying, “When Marky Ramone asks you to be his singer, you don’t even think about it.  It’s an automatic, YES.  I was intimidated by the magnitude of the opportunity – freaked out and overwhelmed – but I was also completely determined and focused – it’s something I had to do.  Even just the first rehearsal felt like an odyssey, but that’s how you can tell the experience is changing your life.  I’ve never had a more rewarding, humbling, orchallenging invitation than this, and I’m serving the gods via this incredible sound Marky and his band created.  There’s never been better rock ‘n’ roll music made than this, and I will give everything I have to do it justice.” The historic pairing will kick-off their world tour in New York City on May 3rd, 2013 at Andrew’s very own venue, Santos Party House, in downtown Manhattan.

Currently, Marky Ramone hosts his own weekly satellite radio show “Punk Rock Blitzkrieg,” which is broadcast nationally via Sirius/XM Faction.  He has also entered the culinary realm with the release of his highly successful Marinara Pasta Sauce, based on his Great Grandfather’s recipe.  Marky Ramone’s Marinara Pasta Sauce has wowed such mainstream media outlets as the Wall Street Journal, Food Network Magazine and the New York Post.  The sauce is even served and sold at world renowned chef Daniel Boulud’s New York City restaurant, DBGB Kitchen & Bar. Andrew W.K. has been a constant figure in national media ever since his 2000 debut, and in recent years he’s been spreading his message of positive partying and high-energy entertainment with even greater intensity.  His singular ability to straddle both mainstream media and fringe culture has made him an instantly recognizable modern pop icon.  An example of his lasting influence is the recent 10th Anniversary Deluxe release of his landmark debut album, I Get Wet, the world tour of which sold out dates across the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan.  Most recently, Energizer Personal Care announced Andrew W.K. as the face of Playtex’s new product, Fresh + Sexy Wipes.  Andrew continues to surprise, confound, and engage his audience with an expanding array of energetic and enthusiastic entertainment.
